Bagasse Biodegradable Bowls & Barrel Bowls:
- Overview / Material: Biodegradable bowls are made from bagasse, a highly sustainable fiber that is a by product of the sugarcane production process.
- Applications: Great for a range of hot & cold foods. The Barrel Bowls each have lids and are great for to go food.
- Sizes: These biodegradable bowls range in size from 6 ounce to 16 ounce.
- Design: Typically available unbleached, though bleached options are occasionally available. The compostable bowls are soak proof and do not have any plastic or wax lining, however hot foods – and in particular hot, heavy foods – will cause the biodegradable bowls to “perspire” and some condensation can form at the bottom.
- Composting: Composting is required for biodegradation. These compostable bowls meet ASTM standard D6400 for compostability. They will biodegrade within 30 days in a commercial composting facility, and within 90 days in a home composting system.
Paper Biodegradable Bowls with PLA lining:
- Overview / Material: Biodegradable bowls are made with paper and are lined with Natureworks Ingeo polylactic acid (PLA), which is derived from corn grown in the USA.
- Applications: Great for hot and cold foods up to 200 F.
- Sizes: Available in 8oz – 16oz sizes.
- Design: Most traditional paper bowls are not compostable in commercial composting facilities as they are lined with polyethylene. These compostable bowls are lined with a full compostable bio-plastic corn resin and are also clearly labeled as compostable.
- Composting: Composting is required for biodegradation. These compostable bowls are BPI certified and meet standard EN 13432 for compostability. They will biodegrade within 180 days in a commercial composting facility, but may take up to a year or more to biodegrade in a home composting system.
