Green Action: Switch from traditional plastic bags and containers to compostable shopping bags and/or food containers
Identify Compostable Bags and Food Containers
Most compostable and biodegradable shopping/trash bags and food containers will be marked specifically as “compostable” or “biodegradable.”
If a bag is not marked as such, it is very likely not compostable.
If you are unsure as to whether a bag or food container is compostable it is best thing to do is:
1) Determine whether the product is certified as compostable by the Biodegradable Products Institute
If you are unable to verify the compostability of your product through BPI, Viv recommends:
2) Asking the manufacturer or wholesaler that is selling the bag / container, or
3) Determining whether it’s made entirely from an all natural and sustainable/renewable source
The most common types of compostable bags & food containers are made from corn or corn starch.
