Compostable Utensils
Overview / Material: Includes compostable forks, compostable spoons, compostable knives, and tasting spoons. The resin in the 200 F compostable utensils is a mixture of 70% non-GMO PLA (derived from corn) and 30% talc. Talc allows the higher temperature ratings. Watch out for companies saying their PLA utensils are compostable. They may use plastic fillers to get temperature rated and are not certified compostable.
Applications: Compostable utensils showing 200F below are great for hot & cold foods; compostable utensils showing 120F below are heat resistant up to 120 degrees F and best for cold or luke warm foods.
Sizes: Generally 6″ in length or as noted.
Design: Strong like plastic, white in color, and imprinted with the word “Compostable” on the back. The resin used to make the compostable utensils is certified compostable according to ASTM-6400 standards.
Composting: Composting is required for biodegredation. The compostable utensils will take 180 days to compost in a commercial composting facility. Home composting is not recommended as they require high heat, which may not occur in most home composting systems, to break down.
Background: Previously, World Centric manufactured non-heat resistant compostable utensils made from non-GMO PLA, and heat resistant compostable utensils made from 80% non-GMO corn starch and 20% other fillers. Through ongoing testing, they discovered that the corn starch resin used in the heat resistant utensils (a resin certified by BPI and ASTM standards) was not fully compostable. Speaking to the integrity behind the company, they discontinued the use of that corn starch resin and now use an alternative resin that meets full compostability standards and has been certified by ASTM D-6400 standards. As a result of their findings, they’ve had other heat resistant compostable utensils on the market tested and found that almost all of them are not compostable. Check out the Plant Fiber Cutlery for unique design and great compostability.
Note: Spoons showing 120F on the World Centric site are made from 100% PLA and meant strictly for cold or lukewarm foods up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
